What Kind Of Meat Is Used For Tacos?

Various types of meat can be used to make tacos, depending on personal preference and regional culinary traditions. Some popular meat options for tacos include:

  • Ground Beef– Ground beef is a common choice for making traditional tacos. It’s easy to cook, versatile and absorbs flavors well. It’s often seasoned with spices like chili powder, cumin, and paprika.
  • Shredded Chicken– Shredded chicken is another popular option for tacos. It can be made using boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs. The chicken is typically cooked with spices and can be seasoned with ingredients like garlic, onion, cumin, and chili powder.
  • Carnitas– Carnitas are made from slow-cooked, tender, and flavorful pork. Traditionally, pork shoulder or pork butt is used to make carnitas. The meat is typically seasoned with spices like cumin, oregano, and garlic, then slow-cooked until it becomes tender and can be shredded.
  • Carne Asada– Carne asada refers to grilled or seared beef, typically made using flank steak or skirt steak. The meat is marinated in a mixture of citrus juices, garlic, and various spices like cumin and chili powder, which gives it a tangy and robust flavor.
  • Barbacoa– Barbacoa is a Mexican style of slow-cooked meat, often made from beef, lamb, or goat. The meat is seasoned with a blend of spices, including cumin, garlic, oregano, and chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. It’s cooked until it becomes tender and can be shredded.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Ground beef– The main protein in the recipe. It gives the taco meat its hearty, rich, and savory base.
  • Onion– Adds sweetness, moisture, and depth of flavor as it cooks with the beef.
  • Garlic– Brings bold, savory flavor that helps round out the seasoning blend.
  • Olive oil– Used for sautéing the onion and garlic and helps everything cook evenly.
  • Chili powder– Adds the signature taco flavor with a mild earthy heat.
  • Cumin– Brings warm, smoky depth that gives taco meat its classic Mexican-inspired taste.
  • Paprika– Adds mild sweetness, color, and a subtle smoky note.
  • Oregano– Adds an herby, slightly peppery flavor that balances the richness of the beef.
  • Salt– Enhances all the other flavors and keeps the taco meat from tasting flat.
  • Black pepper– Adds a little bite and extra savory warmth.
  • Beef broth– Adds moisture and extra richness while helping the meat stay juicy and flavorful in the Instant Pot.

How To Make Taco Meat

  1. Prepare the Instant Pot. Start by setting up your Instant Pot. Ensure the inner pot is clean and properly inserted. Plug in the Instant Pot and press the “Sauté” button. Adjust the heat level to “Normal” or “Medium” and wait until the display shows “Hot.” This indicates that the pot is preheating.
  2. Sauté the Onion and Garlic. Add the olive oil to the preheated Instant Pot. Once the oil is shimmering, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  3. Brown the Ground Beef. Add the ground beef to the pot and break it up with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook the beef until it browns, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. This usually takes around 5-6 minutes.
  4. Add the Seasonings. Once the ground beef is browned, add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings and coat the meat. If you have made my keto taco seasoning, you can use it here instead! Continue cooking for another minute to toast the spices and enhance their flavors.
  5. Add the Liquid Ingredients. Pour in the beef broth. Stir everything together, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits stuck to it. These bits add extra depth and richness to the taco meat.
  6. Serve and Enjoy! Serve your Instant Pot Taco Meat with your favorite sides and toppings for a tasty family-friendly meal.

Tips And Tricks

It doesn’t get much more simple than cooking taco meat in your Instant Pot. So, if you want to ensure the best taste and texture in your ground beef, use some of the tips and tricks below:

  • Choose the right ground beef. Opt for lean ground beef with a fat content of around 85% or higher. This will result in less grease and healthier taco meat. You can also use ground turkey, chicken, or pork as alternatives.
  • Drain excess fat. After browning the ground beef, it’s advisable to drain any excess fat or grease. This will prevent the taco meat from becoming overly greasy or heavy.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste. After shredding the meat, taste and adjust the seasonings if necessary. You can add a pinch more salt, spices, or a splash of lime juice to enhance the flavor and bring out the desired taste profile.

Variations

Want to switch up the flavors of your ground beef taco meat? Try one of these tasty variations next time you make it!

  • Taco Meat with Beans– To make your taco meat heartier, consider adding a can of rinsed and drained black beans or pinto beans. This not only adds texture but also boosts the protein and fiber content of your tacos.
  • Tex-Mex Taco Meat– For a Tex-Mex flair, mix in some canned diced tomatoes with green chilies (such as Rotel), along with a tablespoon of taco seasoning. This combination adds a vibrant, tangy kick to your taco meat.
  • Smoky Chipotle Taco Meat– Add a smoky twist to your taco meat by incorporating chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. Simply chop a few chipotle peppers and stir them into the meat along with a spoonful of the adobo sauce. The result is a spicy and smoky flavor that will take your tacos to the next level.

How To Serve It

Obviously, the most popular way to serve this ground beef taco meat is in a taco! Warm up your taco shells or tortillas and assemble your tacos with the delicious Instant Pot taco meat.
